GPI colleagues and the Centre for Social Science Research (CSSR) at the University of Cape Town recently participated in the Bold Ideas for Brighter Futures 2026 Global Conference in Cape Town from the 18th to the 20th of May, 2026.
The event brought together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and young people from around the world to explore innovative approaches to improving the wellbeing of children and youth.
Bronwen Pietersen from GPI’s SWIFT team highlighted the value of reconnecting with colleagues and engaging with diverse perspectives across the field. “Many of the themes explored throughout the conference resonate strongly with the work of the Global Parenting Initiative, scaling evidence-based programmes, embracing innovation, and advancing a shared commitment to creating healthier futures for children and families.”
For Likhona Qazisa, also from the SWIFT team, one of her most memorable sessions focused on a study in Mpumalanga where young children co-designed an AI-powered mental health support tool. “The session reminded me of the promises and potential of technology and AI when users are included throughout the design and development process, ensuring that solutions are shaped by the lived experiences, needs, and priorities of the people they are intended to serve,” said Likhona.
The conference highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and meaningful youth participation in shaping solutions for children and young people.
