Film-based intervention brings hope to refugee families: insights from DIFI IYF+30 conference

At the recent Doha International Family Institute (DIFI)’s International Year of the Family conference (DIFI IYF+30), Dr. Amanda Sim showcased a unique film-based intervention supporting refugee parents along the Thailand-Myanmar border. Working with Sermpanya Foundation, this three-year project combined storytelling and evidence-based parenting practices to address challenges faced by refugee families.

Baseline findings revealed that:

  • Nearly 70% of children experienced physical punishment in the last month
  • 80% of families lived without documentation
  • 75% faced food insecurity.

Through a film featuring community members, the intervention achieved a 9% reduction in violence against children and improvements in positive parenting.
