Dr. Isang Awah, GPI’s head of advocacy at the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford, was awarded an OPEN Fellowship in 2022 to help close a critical gap in child protection policies in Nigeria.
Despite the known benefits of parenting programmes in reducing child abuse and enhancing family outcomes, this knowledge often doesn’t translate into effective policies on the ground. Through the Oxford Policy Engagement Network (OPEN), Dr. Awah partnered with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health (GASHE division) to provide technical guidance, adapting evidence-based programmes to better support Nigerian families.
By collaborating directly with policymakers, Dr. Awah is helping to create policies that promote safer and healthier family environments for children in Nigeria.
