black father child unlearn harsh parenting

GPI leadership member Dr Godfrey Siu of Makerere University was featured in a May 28, 2022 Monitor article focusing on parenting intervention programmes in Uganda. Dr Siu states, ” …if a parent believes the only way to raise a disciplined child is by beating them and using harsh words, then that child is experiencing abuse. Every child needs parental attachment and bond.”

The Parenting for Respectability programme began in 2014 in Wakiso District, Uganda with a goal of training parents and caregivers in skills that will allow them to raise children in a violence-free environment. PfR’s goals include addressing stereotypical gender roles in the home and the increased involvement of male figures in family life and childcare.

Dr Siu and his co-investigators, Ms Carolyn Namutebi and Ms Agnes Namaganda, will be taking the work forward digitally with the Global Parenting Initiative’s Parenting for Respectability (PfR)- Digital starting in January 2023.
