About the Opportunity

The Institute for Life Course Health Research (ILCHR) in the Department of Global Health at Stellenbosch University, South Africa seeks to recruit a Doctoral Student from Tanzania to be part of the Global Parenting Initiative (GPI)’s ParentApp for the Early Years Tanzania project, in partnership with the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Tanzania. ParentApp for the Early Years is one of the nine research-within-implementation studies of the GPI. The project supports the development and testing of a digital parenting application for caregivers of young children in Tanzania, starting from pregnancy through to the age of 9 years. The project is taking place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, between May 2023 and December 2026.

The candidate will be registered for a PhD in the Department of Global Health at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. All PhD fees will be covered by the project, and the candidate will receive a monthly stipend of $2500 for a period of 3 years.

The PhD candidate’s research will focus on the development, feasibility and acceptability of ParentApp, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The candidate will be involved in the management and implementation of the research project, including project planning, data collection, data management, analyses, report writing and writing manuscripts for publications in peer reviewed journals.

 

About you

Essential Relevant Experience, Skills and Knowledge:

  • Master’s degree in public health, psychology or a related field;
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in project management / research assistance;
  • An excellent academic record;
  • Experience managing and analysing data;
  • Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • At least one first authored publication
  • The ability to work independently;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrable commitment to improving the life of children affected by abuse and poverty

 

Desirable skills:

  • Experience with studies on parenting and violence against children 
  • Experience with digital technology
  • Experience in working in urban communities with low illiteracy

  • The successful candidate will be required to continue registration as a PhD student at Stellenbosch University.
  • The successful incumbent will be required to comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures, and practices for the postdoctoral sector.
